The Ophthalmologic Institute Quironsalud Dexeus - OID – is a new medical-surgical center located in the Dexeus University Hospital, that has the most advanced technology in the diagnosis, care and medical and surgical treatment of ocular health. The Institute is formed by a team of highly qualified professionals, with 23 ophthalmologists and 12 optometrists, in addition to the nursing and administrative personnel specialized in the care of the ophthalmological patient. The facilities of the new ophthalmology service are located in two consultation floors and in the operating room area, with more than 300 m2 dedicated to ocular health.

The medical direction of the Ophthalmological Institute is Dr. Carlos Vergés, prestigious internationally recognized ophthalmologist, pioneer in the surgery of cataracts and the treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome.

The most advanced technology in cataract and refractive surgery

The IOD, has an operating theater and a laser room equipped with the most advanced technology in eye surgery. The new center also has a fully equipped operating room to perform the micropulsated phacoemulsification technique. This surgery consists of a probe that transmits cold micropulsed ultrasound to fragment the opaque content of the crystalline lens into tiny particles that are aspirated by the same probe, leaving only the lens capsule. Then, thanks to the MICS-Bimanual technique, a microincision of less than 2 mm is performed to place an intraocular lens and correct the patient's graduation or even eliminate the need for close-up glasses of age.

The medical and surgical team of IOD, is prepared to perform this surgery on both eyes simultaneously, so that in a single intervention the patient regains vision of both eyes with a very quick recovery time and a very effective and safe way.

Functional units

The IOD, is structured in 9 units directed to the different areas of ophthalmology such as, vitreous-retina, glaucoma, cataracts, refractive surgery, cornea, ophthalmopediatrics, neuroophthalmology, oculoplastic and general ophthalmology. These areas also include areas such as contact lenses, low vision and visual therapy, among others.

However, there is also a cross-sectional structure coordinated with the rest of specialists at the Dexeus University Hospital, where through what we call functional units, ophthalmologists and other specialists in the hospital environment treat the patient comprehensively.

The fact of creating the functional units is one of the differentiating and new elements of the new service. Based on the Anglo-Saxon model, it is a question of forming highly specialized areas, of a polyvalent and multidisciplinary nature. The Diabetes unit stands out, where specialists in the retina, cornea and endocrinologists specializing in diabetes converge.
