What is Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion (or Dermaplaning), is an aesthetic procedure that uses abrasion, or scraping, to wear down the skin’s upper layers. Dermabrasion is carried out with special instruments to remove the surface of the skin.
The purpose of dermabrasion is to remove scars, fine lines and wrinkles and to smooth the skin as a new layer grows back.
Dermabrasion can be carried out on small areas of the face or the whole face.

How is Dermabrasion carried out?

  • The skin is frozen with a spray after being thoroughly cleansed.
  • The surgeon uses a small wire brush or rotating instrument to scrape away the upper layer of the skin.
  • The surgeon then protects the treated skin with ointment or a dressing.

Who is a suitable candidate for Dermabrasion?
People with darker skins may not be suitable for dermabrasion as the procedure can cause skin discoloration. If you have active acne you will not be a suitable candidate for dermabrasion.

Days admitted : None.

Anesthesia : Dermabrasion is most commonly carried out under local anesthesia, although general anesthesia is sometimes used.

Recovery : - Recovery is usually complete within 10 days to two weeks, after which time you can resume normal activities. - The skin will remain pink and sensitive for up to a month.

Risks : - Change in skin pigmentation, blotchiness or darkening. - Enlarged pores. - Infection. - Scarring.
